Changes of wheat production in the Northcentral region of China
Wheat production in Northcentral China has been increasing year by year since 1985. Henan was on the top of wheat production in the region, Shandong achieved almost same production before 1996, but decreased after that due to the decrease of planting area. Wheat production in Hebei ranked third with almost half of that in Henan. Then followed by Shanxi, Beijing and Tianjin with bottom level of the wheat production (Fig.1).
The reasons for differences in wheat production mainly resulted from the combined effect of wheat planting area and wheat yield. The highest wheat yield and highest planting area contributed to the highest wheat production in Henan. For Shandong, the integration effect of decrease of wheat planting area and wheat yield after 1998 resulting in the wheat production declining although wheat yields increased after 2002. In Hebei, wheat production changed with almost the same tendency of planting area despite the rising trend of wheat yield (Fig. 2 & 3).
It is interesting if we analyzed the detail changes of wheat production in Beijing and Tianjin, the wheat production followed similar trends with wheat planting area although wheat yield increased with the year (Fig. 4,5 & 6).
From the above analyses, wheat planting area is the key to influence the wheat production. Therefore it is of great importance to maintain wheat planting area for wheat production in China.
