NPK Consumption Trends of South India
- The Southern region occupies 17 percent of the total cropped area in India (190.3 m. ha).
- Agriculture is advancing steadily, hence this region is the biggest consumer of nutrients.
- It's share was nearly 21, 25 and 44 percent of total N, P2O5 and K2O consumed at the national level.
- Nutrient consumption was steadily increasing from 1992-93 to 1999-2000, and there was a slight decline till 2003-04 (primarily due to drought) .
- 2004-05 was the year of remarkable increase in NPK consumption.
- Potash consumption has increased sharply (33%) during 2004-05 followed by phosphorus (27%) and then nitrogen (14%) over previous year.
- These changes represent the balancing of high nitrogen rates with appropriate additions of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers.
